Shine with Music
Shine with Music is a music programme designed specifically for children and young people with special educational needs. Through carefully adapted musical experiences, participants are encouraged to explore sound, rhythm, movement, and instruments in a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment where every individual can participate at their own pace.
Rather than focusing on musical ability, the sessions celebrate communication in all its forms. Whether a participant joins in by playing an instrument, moving to the music, making vocal sounds, using gestures, or simply listening and observing, every response is recognised as meaningful. Activities are flexible and adapted to meet individual sensory, communication, and learning needs, ensuring that each participant can engage in a way that feels comfortable and enjoyable.
Music provides opportunities to develop important skills in a natural and motivating way. Through songs, rhythm games, turn-taking activities, and instrument play, participants can strengthen attention, listening, anticipation, imitation, and cause-and-effect understanding. The predictable structure of music and repeated musical routines can also help create a sense of familiarity, supporting engagement and making transitions between activities easier.
The sessions also encourage social connection and shared experiences. Making music together promotes interaction, joint attention, and opportunities to communicate with peers, family members, and facilitators without relying solely on spoken language. Most importantly, Shine with Music offers a positive space where participants can experience success, express themselves freely, build confidence, and enjoy the many ways music can bring people together.
